COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA International Relations degree at Aberystwyth University provides a comprehensive and engaging study of global politics, combining theoretical foundations with practical insights into contemporary international issues. In the first year, students develop core skills and conceptual understanding through modules such as Exploring the International and Behind the Headlines, while optional modules cover topics including globalization, modern political developments, and the historical context of war, strategy, and intelligence. The second year builds on this foundation with a core module on International Relations: Perspectives and Debates, complemented by a wide range of optional modules that examine key areas such as nuclear strategy, covert operations, human rights, climate governance, comparative politics, and the politics of conflict and cooperation. Students also explore the historical and contemporary roles of international organizations, states, and transnational actors in shaping global outcomes. The final year culminates in a dissertation, allowing students to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, while optional modules provide further specialization in areas such as US intelligence, NATO, EU politics, and the Arab-Israeli conflicts. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and research skills, preparing them for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, policy-making, research, or roles in government and non-governmental sectors focused on international relations and global security.
