COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA International Relations and Military History degree at Aberystwyth University offers a comprehensive study of global politics alongside the history and impact of warfare. In the first year, students develop a foundation in international relations, examining central concepts and historical developments from 1789 to the present, while exploring issues such as war, strategy, and intelligence. Core modules focus on understanding the modern world and building analytical and research skills, while optional modules allow students to investigate contemporary global issues and political developments. The second year deepens knowledge of military history with core study of warfare after Waterloo, alongside a wide range of optional modules covering historical and modern conflicts, covert operations, security strategies, and international politics. This combination allows students to connect historical conflicts with current international security challenges, while also exploring topics such as nuclear strategy, climate governance, and global development. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation to pursue independent research in military history or international relations, supported by optional modules that include intelligence studies, global conflicts, and political strategy. Across the course, students develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in military, government, intelligence, security analysis, policy-making, and research, while gaining a nuanced understanding of how historical conflicts continue to shape contemporary global politics.
