COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History degree offers a broad and flexible curriculum that introduces students to historical study through core training in interpreting evidence, constructing arguments and understanding major historical themes. In the first year, students gain essential grounding with an introduction to historical methods while exploring optional modules that span medieval to modern periods, including medieval and early modern Europe, modern global history, and Welsh history. The second year builds research confidence through a core module that develops analytical, methodological and writing skills, complemented by a wide range of optional topics such as medieval chronicles, Victorian culture, propaganda in Southeast Asia, Weimar Germany, medieval famine, the European Reformation and modern Japan. These options allow students to shape their studies around political, social, cultural or global history. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation, applying the skills acquired throughout the degree to a substantial piece of original research. They can additionally choose from advanced modules covering areas like Colombian republican history, the Ku Klux Klan in American society, the English Reformation, medieval kingship, the Reconstruction era in the United States and the history of Welsh-British relations. Overall, the degree provides rich historical breadth, research depth and excellent preparation for future careers or further study.
