COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA English Studies and Climate Change degree at Aberystwyth University combines literary study with environmental awareness, offering students a unique interdisciplinary approach to understanding climate issues. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in creative and critical writing through modules such as Beginning Creative Writing, Critical Practice, and Climate and Climate Change, while exploring a variety of literary texts and approaches. Optional modules broaden their engagement with poetry, speculative fiction, historical literature, and language studies, building analytical and expressive skills. The second year deepens this engagement by examining literature in the context of climate change and governance, alongside the study of literary theory, the nineteenth-century climate lens, and contemporary climate writing. Students also have opportunities to study global development, international relations, and creative nonfiction, integrating literary analysis with social, political, and environmental contexts. In the third year, students complete an independent research project, allowing them to produce a substantial piece of original work that combines literary and climate-focused inquiry. Optional modules include environmental economics, biodiversity conservation, crisis writing, post-colonial literature, and writing across multiple genres, enabling students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the intersections between literature, society, and the climate crisis. Graduates gain analytical, research, and creative skills suitable for careers in the creative industries, environmental communication, policy, and further interdisciplinary study.
