COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature and Creative Writing degree at Aberystwyth University provides students with a comprehensive blend of creative practice and literary study across three years. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in creative writing and critical analysis through core modules like Beginning Creative Writing and Critical Practice, alongside optional modules covering diverse areas such as poetry, American literature, historical texts, and interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary issues. Year two deepens literary knowledge with a core focus on Literary Theory: Debates and Dialogues while offering options that allow students to explore genres such as poetry, short stories, creative non-fiction, and drama, as well as thematic studies including literature and climate, literary geographies, and historical literary analysis. In the final year, students undertake an Independent Research Project, consolidating their creative and scholarly skills. Optional modules in the third year provide advanced opportunities in genres and styles, including writing crime fiction, horror, music, and drama, alongside studies in contemporary fiction, post-colonial literature, Victorian childhoods, literary theory, and innovative reinterpretations of classical works. Across the program, students develop critical thinking, research proficiency, and professional writing abilities, emerging with a strong portfolio of creative work and the intellectual versatility to pursue careers in the creative industries, publishing, education, or further study.
