COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Geotechnical Engineering at Abertay equips students with advanced technical expertise and practical skills essential for modern geotechnical and structural engineering projects. In the first term, students study Structural Design and Geotechnical Engineering, gaining a strong foundation in designing and analysing soil-structure systems, and Offshore Geotechnical Engineering, focusing on the challenges of foundation design in marine and offshore environments. Optional modules such as Health, Safety and Environmental Management provide an understanding of regulatory frameworks, sustainable practices, and risk management applicable to both onshore and offshore projects. In the second term, Research Methods develops the analytical and investigative skills necessary for evidence-based engineering practice and applied problem-solving. Finite Element Analysis and Application introduces advanced computational techniques for modelling complex structural and geotechnical problems, while Advanced Structural and Geotechnical Engineering builds on core principles to address large-scale and technically challenging projects. Optional Innovation in Design encourages students to explore creative and practical approaches to engineering design within realistic project constraints. The program culminates in an MSc dissertation, allowing students to undertake an independent research project that integrates theory, technical skills, and practical application. Overall, the MSc prepares graduates for careers in consulting, construction, offshore energy, and infrastructure development, equipping them to tackle complex engineering challenges and contribute to sustainable and innovative geotechnical solutions.
