COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biomedical Sciences at Abertay provides an in-depth exploration of laboratory-based diagnostics, point-of-care technologies, and applied biomedical research. In the first term, students develop foundational knowledge through modules on laboratory diagnostic methods and techniques, principles of point-of-care devices and systems, and experimental design for testing and evaluation. These modules equip students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to design, implement, and evaluate biomedical assays and diagnostic tools. In the second term, the focus shifts to advanced applications and quality management, including quality assurance practices, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and statistical process control, ensuring that students can interpret data accurately, maintain rigorous standards, and apply analytical techniques in clinical and research contexts. The program culminates in an MSc dissertation, where students undertake independent research, applying learned methodologies to address real-world biomedical questions or challenges. Throughout the course, students gain hands-on laboratory experience, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and engage with contemporary issues in diagnostics and healthcare. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application, the MSc prepares graduates for careers in clinical laboratories, diagnostics, research and development, or biotechnology, equipping them to contribute effectively to advancements in healthcare and biomedical science.
