COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning program at Abertay is a four-year degree designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional expertise needed to work as strength and conditioning practitioners. In the first year, students build a foundation in social science for sport, anatomy and biomechanics, fundamentals of coaching, physiology, psychology of exercise and health, numeracy, and university success skills, providing a broad understanding of human performance, movement, and health. The second year deepens this knowledge with modules in sport and exercise psychology, key concepts in physiology and biomechanics, physical activity for health and wellbeing, and practical placement experience working with children, alongside support for second-year entrants. In the third year, the focus shifts to applied and specialised areas, including fundamentals of strength and conditioning, physiological adaptations for performance, applied biomechanics, research methods, and developing coaching practice, enabling students to design and implement training programs based on evidence-based principles. The final year emphasises advanced study and independent research, with modules in advanced biomechanics and injury prevention, advanced sport and exercise physiology, advanced strength and conditioning, and a sport research project, allowing students to consolidate practical and theoretical expertise. Overall, the program integrates science, practical application, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in professional sport, performance optimisation, fitness, rehabilitation, and further postgraduate study.
