COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise degree at Abertay University is a comprehensive and practical program designed to prepare students for diverse careers in the sports, health, and fitness industries. In Year 1, students are introduced to core scientific and social concepts through modules such as Social Science for Sport and Exercise, Introduction to Anatomy and Biomechanics, Physiology for Sport and Exercise, Psychology of Exercise and Health, and Fundamentals of Coaching. These modules are complemented by Abertay 101, which supports academic and personal development for university success.Year 2 builds on this foundation by deepening knowledge and introducing more applied learning. Students explore Psychology for Sport and Exercise, delve into key physiological and biomechanical concepts, and begin applying their skills in real-world settings through a placement module focused on working with children in physical activity contexts. A strong emphasis is placed on health and wellbeing, with Physical Activity for Health and Wellbeing providing critical insights into community health promotion.In Year 3, the program focuses on research development through the core module Research Methods. This prepares students to critically evaluate academic literature and equips them with the necessary skills to undertake independent research.Year 4 culminates in the Sport Research Project, a major independent piece of work that allows students to investigate a topic of personal or professional interest. This capstone project showcases students’ ability to plan, execute, and reflect on a detailed investigation, demonstrating the academic and practical competencies gained throughout the course.Throughout the degree, students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including bespoke physiology and biomechanics labs, and strong links to the sport and fitness sectors.
