COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science program at Abertay is a four-year degree designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for careers in sport, exercise, and health. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules in social science for sport, anatomy and biomechanics, fundamentals of coaching, physiology, psychology of exercise and health, numeracy, and university success skills. This year focuses on understanding human movement, health, and performance, alongside academic and practical competencies. The second year advances knowledge with modules in sport and exercise psychology, key concepts in physiology and biomechanics, physical activity for health and wellbeing, and placements working with children, alongside support for second-year entrants. This year combines scientific principles with applied experience to prepare students for practical settings. In the third year, students study strength and conditioning, physiological adaptations for performance, applied sport psychology, applied biomechanics, and research methods, enhancing their ability to optimise performance and analyse data. The fourth year emphasises specialisation and independent research with advanced biomechanics and injury prevention, advanced sport and exercise physiology, and a sport research project, allowing students to apply theory in real-world contexts. Overall, the program integrates science, practical skills, and research, preparing graduates for careers in sport science, exercise prescription, coaching, performance analysis, and health promotion.
