COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health program at Abertay is structured over four years, providing a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules in social science for sport and exercise, anatomy and biomechanics, fundamentals of coaching, physiology, psychology of exercise and health, and practical skills for everyday life. This year focuses on understanding the scientific, psychological, and social aspects of physical activity and its impact on health. In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with more advanced study in sport and exercise psychology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and physical activity for health and wellbeing, alongside placements and skill development in working with children. The third year emphasizes applied learning, covering social issues in sport and exercise, health-related fitness assessment and programming, physical activity and health promotion, and research methods to prepare students for evidence-based practice. The final year allows for specialization and independent research through modules in physical activity for special populations, lifestyle management, and a sport research project. Overall, the degree combines scientific principles, health promotion, research skills, and practical experience, preparing graduates to promote health, manage physical activity interventions, and contribute effectively to the wellbeing of individuals and communities across diverse settings.
