COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Sciences degree at Abertay University provides a structured and immersive learning experience over four years, combining core scientific knowledge with practical forensic investigation skills. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through six core modules, including chemistry, biology, and human physiology. The curriculum introduces key concepts in forensic science and laboratory techniques while helping students transition into university life with the Abertay 101 module. These early studies establish the basic scientific principles required for forensic work.In Year 2, the focus shifts to more specialized topics. Students explore forensic psychology to understand offender behavior, and forensic human identification to learn methods for analyzing human remains. They also study molecular biology and genetics, forensic quality standards, and investigative analytical science, which are critical for interpreting complex biological and chemical evidence. Work-based learning is embedded to develop professional practice.Year 3 deepens students’ forensic expertise with six core modules. These cover a wide range of applied topics such as firearms, fire and explosion investigations, forensic pharmacology and toxicology, and trace evidence analysis. Students also study forensic biology and scene examination, gaining hands-on experience in examining and managing crime scenes using advanced analytical techniques such as chromatography and spectroscopy.In the final year, students refine their knowledge through modules focused on the application of DNA in forensic investigations and the scientific understanding of substances of abuse. Interpretation and presentation of evidence is emphasized to prepare students for legal settings, where they may need to present their findings in court. Students also undertake an Honours Project, where they carry out independent research, demonstrating their analytical skills, critical thinking, and scientific understanding.This degree equips graduates with a strong blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing them for careers in forensic science, law enforcement, or further academic research in related fields.
