COURSE CURRICULUM

The Food, Nutrition and Health degree at Abertay University offers a comprehensive and practical education that explores the vital connections between diet, exercise, and overall health. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation through six core modules covering the fundamentals of nutrition, biological sciences, safe food handling, consumer awareness, and the social science of sport and exercise. These subjects provide a multidisciplinary base in both food science and human health. The Abertay 101 module also supports students in building academic and study skills for university success.Year 2 deepens this foundation with modules that include key concepts in sport and exercise physiology, food design and promotion, public health nutrition, and an in-depth study of nutritional needs throughout different stages of life. Students also explore food characterisation to understand how different properties affect safety, quality, and nutrition. These modules strengthen knowledge in public health, food innovation, and health promotion.In Year 3, students tailor their learning through a range of optional modules. In Term 1, they can choose from areas such as food processing, clinical nutrition, food behaviour, functional food properties, and fitness assessment. In Term 2, students either undertake a full-term placement or split their time between a shorter placement and a module in lifestyle management. These placements provide real-world experience in settings such as schools, NHS facilities, or community projects, enhancing employability.Year 4 focuses on research and critical analysis. Students study research methods in Term 1 and complete an Honours Project in Term 2, conducting independent research on a topic of their choice. This final year allows students to apply their skills in a focused, academic context.Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in public health, nutrition, fitness, food safety, and community wellbeing by combining scientific knowledge with hands-on experience and real-world application.
