COURSE CURRICULUM

The Food, Nutrition and Health degree at Abertay University offers a well-rounded and practical education focused on the links between diet, health, and public wellbeing. In Year 1, students are introduced to the core principles of nutrition and health sciences through six modules. These include Fundamentals of Nutrition, Applied Biological Sciences for Food and Human Health, and Nutrition and the Consumer, alongside Safe Food Handling and Social Science for Sport and Exercise. The Abertay 101 module supports academic and personal development as students transition into university study.In Year 2, students build on this foundation with five core modules that explore more advanced and applied topics. Key subjects include Food Design and Promotion, Nutrition through the Lifespan, Public Health Nutrition and Health Promotion, and Food Characterisation. A module in Sport and Exercise Physiology adds further depth by connecting physical activity and health, reinforcing the holistic nature of nutritional science.Year 3 focuses on specialised areas and practical experience. Students study Clinical Nutrition 1, Food and Behaviour, and Food Properties and Functionalities, developing knowledge of how diet affects clinical conditions, eating habits, and food functionality. A key feature is the Placement module, where students gain hands-on experience in professional environments such as healthcare, schools, or community projects, enhancing their practical skills and career readiness.In the final year, students complete five core modules that focus on advanced topics and independent research. These include Public Health Nutrition and Health Promotion 2, Current Topics in Food, and Clinical Nutrition 2. The Project Research Methods and Management module prepares students for their Honours Project, where they conduct original research on a topic of their choice.Throughout the course, students develop scientific, analytical, and communication skills that prepare them for careers in nutrition, public health, food industries, education, and health promotion, with accreditation by the Association for Nutrition.
