COURSE CURRICULUM

The Food, Nutrition and Health degree at Abertay University offers a comprehensive and practical curriculum that explores the vital links between diet, physical activity, and health. In Year 1, students gain a strong foundation through six core modules. These cover the basics of nutrition, food safety, and consumer behaviour, along with applied biological sciences and an introduction to social science in sport and exercise. The Abertay 101 module helps students transition into university learning, developing key academic skills.In Year 2, students expand their knowledge with a focus on public health and food science. Core modules include Nutrition Through the Lifespan, which examines changing dietary needs across different life stages, and Key Concepts in Sport and Exercise Physiology, exploring how the body responds to physical activity. Other modules such as Food Design and Promotion, Food Characterisation, and Public Health Nutrition and Health Promotion 1 provide practical insights into nutrition messaging and food product development.Year 3 introduces more applied learning, including a 40-credit work placement that offers valuable real-world experience in settings like schools, health services, or community programs. Students also study Clinical Nutrition 1, Food and Behaviour, Health Related Fitness Assessment and Programming, and Lifestyle Management. This stage helps students connect theory with practice, focusing on behavioural change and health improvement strategies.In the final year, students build advanced expertise in public health, clinical nutrition, and inclusive fitness. Modules include Public Health Nutrition and Health Promotion 2, Physical Activity for Special Populations, and Clinical Nutrition 2. A Sport Research Project allows students to explore a topic of interest in depth, while Lifestyle Management continues to develop practical intervention strategies.Graduates are equipped with the scientific knowledge, practical experience, and communication skills to work in public health, health promotion, nutrition consultancy, or fitness and wellbeing roles, or to pursue further study.
