COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computing degree at Abertay University offers a comprehensive and practice-driven curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in the dynamic and evolving IT industry. In Year 1, students are introduced to the fundamentals of computing, including programming with C++, computer networking, software design, computer hardware architecture and operating systems, and the basics of development security. The Abertay 101 module supports students' academic skills and transition into university learning.Year 2 builds on this foundation with five core modules focusing on more advanced technical skills. Students explore algorithms and data structures across two modules, application design, user-focused programming, and dynamic web development. These modules provide a deeper understanding of software logic, problem-solving, and front-end web technologies, setting the stage for more complex development work.In Year 3, the program shifts toward real-world application and professional practice. Students study mobile app development, machine learning fundamentals, web services, and software engineering practices. A two-part professional project module helps students plan, prototype, develop, and deliver a substantial piece of software, mirroring industry project workflows and enhancing both technical and project management skills.The final year focuses on advanced and emerging areas of computing. Students engage with modules such as Enterprise Systems Engineering and Big Data, IoT and Cloud Secure Development, and Advanced Topics in Computing, ensuring they are familiar with current industry demands. The Honours Project is a key component, where students propose, execute, and document an independent research or development project, demonstrating their capabilities as future computing professionals.Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience with contemporary tools and technologies, building a strong portfolio and skill set that aligns with industry needs. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in software development, systems engineering, web and mobile technologies, cloud computing, IoT, and other high-demand computing fields.
