COURSE CURRICULUM

The early years of the BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree build a strong technical base through essential computing, programming and problem-solving modules. In the first term, students study computer hardware architecture and operating systems, gaining an understanding of how computers function at a low level, alongside programming with C++, which introduces key coding skills. Academic support through Abertay 101 helps students transition into university-level study. In the second term, students develop numeracy and analytical skills and begin exploring core computing topics such as software design, computer networking and fundamental concepts in development and security. Year 2 deepens technical ability with Data Structures and Algorithms 1, secure web development and application design, helping students learn how to build secure, well-structured and efficient programs. Additional academic support is provided for direct entrants. In the second term, Data Structures and Algorithms 2 strengthens problem-solving through more advanced computational techniques, while Designing for the User introduces principles of user experience and usability. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive introduction to programming, system design, security, networking and user-focused development, setting the foundation for more advanced study in later years.
