COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cybersecurity degree at Abertay University offers a structured and progressive curriculum that builds a strong foundation in computer science while developing specialised skills in cybersecurity. In Year 1, students are introduced to the core concepts of computing through six modules. These include computer hardware and operating systems, networking fundamentals, programming in C++, software design, and the basics of development and security. The Abertay 101 module also supports students' transition into university by developing academic and study skills. This foundational year sets the stage for more complex and applied learning in later years.In Year 2, the focus shifts to deepening programming knowledge and beginning cybersecurity specialisation. Modules include two courses on data structures and algorithms, which are essential for efficient problem-solving. Application design and user interface considerations are also covered, alongside a dedicated penetration testing module that introduces students to ethical hacking and vulnerability assessment techniques.Year 3 expands the technical and practical skills of students. Core modules include advanced networking, software engineering, and secure software development. Students also explore web application penetration testing, ethical hacking, and the fundamentals of machine learning, which are increasingly relevant in identifying and preventing cyber threats.In the final year, students complete advanced cybersecurity studies through modules such as human-centred security, which explores how users interact with secure systems, and IoT and cloud secure development, focusing on modern system security. A strong emphasis is placed on independent research, with students completing both a project proposal and a full honours dissertation. A mathematics for cybersecurity module ensures students can approach problems with analytical precision.Throughout the program, students engage in hands-on learning, ethical hacking practices, and secure system design. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in cybersecurity, penetration testing, secure software development, and digital forensics, in both public and private sectors.
