The Computer Games Technology degree at Abertay University provides a highly focused and technically rigorous education for aspiring games programrs. In Year 1, students are introduced to the core foundations of computer games development, learning programming with C++ and games programming through practical modules. Additional subjects like computer hardware, operating systems, software design, and applied mathematics help students understand the systems that underpin modern games. Abertay 101 supports students in developing effective academic and personal skills for university life.In Year 2, students continue to build their technical expertise by studying advanced programming and mathematical concepts. Modules include Game Programming and System Architectures, Data Structures and Algorithms (split across two semesters), Graphics Programming, and Applied Mathematics 2. This year deepens their understanding of game mechanics, visual rendering, and the computational logic that drives gameplay.Year 3 moves toward advanced applications and real-world development. Students explore Graphics Programming with Shaders to master detailed rendering techniques, and Artificial Intelligence to build responsive, dynamic gameplay. Game Engine Development allows students to design and implement their own game engine, while the Professional Project develops teamwork and project management skills through the creation of a functional game prototype in multidisciplinary teams.In the final year, students polish their skills and undertake a substantial individual research project. Modules include Programming Animation Systems, Applied Mathematics 4, and Professional Development, all of which enhance employability and technical depth. The Honours Project Proposal and Execution, alongside the Dissertation, gives students the opportunity to showcase their innovation, problem-solving, and programming expertise through a major individual project.Graduates leave with an in-depth understanding of game engine architecture, graphics systems, AI, and animation programming, supported by a strong portfolio of technical work. They are well-prepared for careers in game development, simulation, or other software engineering roles in the interactive media industry.
