COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science degree at Abertay University delivers a thorough and practice-oriented education in the biological and chemical sciences that underpin human health and disease. In Year 1, students are introduced to the fundamentals through six core modules. These include Foundations of Chemistry, Principles of Biomedical Science, Biology Principles and Practice, Human Physiology, and the Abertay 101 module which helps students adjust to university-level study. This year builds a solid base in scientific principles, preparing students for more specialised study.In Year 2, students focus on key biomedical topics through five core modules. They explore Cell Biology and Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Physiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Investigative Analytical Science. These modules develop a deeper understanding of how the human body functions at the cellular and molecular levels, and how diseases impact these systems.In Year 3, students can follow either a non-applied or applied route. The non-applied route includes six core modules covering Clinical Biochemistry and Cellular Pathology, Professional Studies, Haematology and Transfusion Science, Advanced Methods in Biomedical Science, an Applications Mini Project, and a pharmaceutical module titled Test Tube to Tablet. The applied route includes the same key modules, but instead of the mini project and pharmaceutical studies, students undertake a BMS Clinical Placement, gaining valuable real-world experience in a healthcare setting.In the final year, students take five advanced modules. These include Advanced Medical Genetics, Advanced Pathophysiology, Global Perspectives in Public Health, and Project Research Methods. The year culminates in an Honours Project, allowing students to conduct independent research on a specialised topic of their choice.Throughout the degree, students develop strong practical lab skills, analytical thinking, and professional readiness. Graduates are well-equipped for careers in hospital laboratories, biomedical research, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, or further postgraduate study.
