COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil and Environmental Engineering degree at Abertay University offers a structured and practical curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and structural design. In Year 1, students build a solid foundation through six core modules. These include Engineering Science, an introduction to civil and environmental engineering, and environmental sciences, alongside landscape processes and surveying. The Abertay 101 module supports academic development and success in higher education. This year introduces key engineering principles and familiarises students with environmental systems and surveying techniques.Year 2 advances students' understanding with five core modules that deepen their knowledge in both civil and environmental engineering disciplines. Modules such as Environmental Engineering, Water Resources and Fluid Mechanics, Structural Engineering 1, Engineering Science 3, and Surveying and Construction focus on the core scientific and technical aspects of the field. Students learn how to apply theory to real-world problems, preparing for more complex challenges in later years.Year 3 centres on applied learning and professional experience. Students study Civil and Environmental Engineering Practice, Geotechnical Engineering, and Structural Engineering 2. The Placement module is a key feature, offering hands-on experience in an industry setting, helping students develop practical skills and gain insight into professional practice.Year 4 integrates advanced knowledge and research skills through six modules. These include Structural Design and Geotechnical Engineering, Finite Element Analysis, and Water and Environmental Engineering. The Integrating Group Project and Civil and Environmental Engineering Project allow students to collaborate and conduct independent research, supported by a module in project research methods and management.Throughout the degree, students gain a balance of theoretical knowledge and applied skills, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, safety, and innovation. The course prepares graduates for careers in civil engineering, environmental consultancy, infrastructure development, and related sectors, with pathways to professional accreditation.
