COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Management degree at Abertay University offers a comprehensive, practice-based education that prepares students for careers in the sport and physical activity sector. The program blends sport science, psychology, and management principles to equip students with the skills required to thrive in a dynamic industry.In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of sport and management through core modules such as Social Science for Sport and Exercise, Psychology for Exercise and Health, Fundamentals of Coaching, and The Nature of Management. These modules develop a baseline understanding of human behaviour, physical activity, and organisational practices, complemented by Abertay 101, which supports student success in academic and personal development.Year 2 builds on this foundation with a focus on applied learning. Students complete a hands-on placement working with children in a physical activity setting and delve deeper into sport psychology. Modules in Human Resource Management and Events Budgeting and Finance further strengthen managerial and organisational skills.In Year 3, the curriculum explores critical topics such as Social Issues in Sport and Exercise, and Sport Development in Practice. Students also gain experience in event management and research methodologies, preparing them for independent research and leadership roles.Year 4 allows students to apply everything they have learned in a final Sport Research Project. Modules like Duty of Care in Sport and Sport for Development examine the ethical, legal, and social responsibilities within the sport sector. Students also manage a Live Event Project and learn strategies for Managing Change, equipping them with real-world project and leadership experience.By the end of the program, graduates are well-prepared for roles in sport development, event coordination, coaching, and facility management. The course combines theory, practice, and critical reflection to ensure students graduate as capable, forward-thinking sport professionals.
