COURSE CURRICULUM

The Game Design and Production degree at Abertay University offers a comprehensive and immersive journey into the creative and technical aspects of game development. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of game design through core modules such as Developing Game Concepts, Game Art Production, Game Engines and the Principles of Programming, and Quality Assurance and User Experience. These are supported by studies in Game Studies and Criticism, which explore the cultural and theoretical aspects of games, alongside Abertay 101, which supports students in developing essential academic skills.In Year 2, students tailor their learning by choosing three option modules from a range that includes Gameplay and Narrative Design, Business for Games, Audio Design, User Interfaces and Interaction Design, and Level Design and Scripting. This flexibility allows students to build expertise aligned with their interests and career goals. They also complete Media Production as a core module, gaining practical experience in collaborative digital media creation.Year 3 deepens professional skills with two key modules: Production and Leadership, which focuses on project management and team coordination, and the Professional Project, where students work in multidisciplinary teams to create game prototypes in a studio-like environment.In the final year, students refine their academic and industry knowledge through Research Design for Games, Critical Design Practice, and Creative and Cultural Industries. These modules develop research, reflective practice, and awareness of the broader creative sectors. The Honours Project serves as the capstone experience, allowing students to explore a topic of their choice in depth and showcase their design, development, and critical thinking skills.This degree combines practical experience, technical proficiency, and critical understanding, preparing graduates for diverse roles in game design, production, UX, and creative leadership within the global games industry.
