COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology degree offers a four-year comprehensive study of crime, society and human behaviour, combining theoretical and applied perspectives. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules on crime and punishment, contemporary social issues, criminal justice theories, media and the digital society, and social research methods, alongside support for academic and numeracy skills. Year 2 builds on this base with criminological theory, classical social theory, introduction to policing, criminalisation in the 21st century, and further social research projects, enhancing students’ analytical and research capabilities while examining how social structures shape law and order. Year 3 focuses on specialised topics, including penal institutions, contemporary social theory, gender and crime, race, ethnicity and immigration, alongside advanced social research projects, allowing students to explore social inequalities and the intersections of crime and society. In Year 4, students consolidate their learning through modules in political sociology, problems of human survival in the 21st century, and an honours project, providing opportunities for independent research and critical analysis of contemporary social challenges. Throughout the program, students develop a strong understanding of social processes, crime regulation, research methods and ethical considerations, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, social research, policy development, community engagement, advocacy and related fields, with a focus on addressing complex societal issues.
