COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Policing degree provides a structured, in-depth study of crime, society and law enforcement over four years. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge through modules on crime and punishment, contemporary social issues, criminal justice theories and processes, media and digital society, and social research methods, supported by academic and numeracy skills. Year 2 builds on this foundation with criminological theory, classical social theory, introduction to policing, criminalisation in the 21st century, and advanced social research projects, helping students develop critical thinking and research skills while understanding how policing interacts with social structures. In Year 3, the focus shifts to applied policing and contemporary challenges, including penal institutions, cybercrime and policing technology, policing in practice, criminal investigation, and advanced social research projects, providing practical insights and analytical tools for understanding modern law enforcement. The final year emphasises independent research and advanced policing knowledge through the honours project, policing communities, and policing and criminal justice in the 21st century, allowing students to integrate theory, research and practical application. Across the program, students develop analytical, communication and investigative skills, preparing them for careers in policing, criminal justice, community safety, research or further academic study in criminology and related disciplines.
