ABOUT UNIVERSITY

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is a leading public research university in Stockholm, Sweden, and the country’s largest technical university, specializing in engineering and technology. Its origins trace back to 1697 with the establishment of the Laboratorium Mechanicum by Christopher Polhem, later developing through the School of Mechanics in 1798 and becoming the Technological Institute in 1827. In 1877, it adopted its current name, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, reflecting its status as a higher education institution, with the Swedish king serving as its patron. Over time, KTH expanded its academic scope, adding disciplines such as civil engineering and architecture, extending programme durations, and strengthening scientific foundations. The university gradually evolved from a practice-focused institute into a research-oriented institution, gaining the right to award doctoral degrees in 1927. Its main campus on Valhallavägen was established in the early 20th century and remains central to university life. KTH has played a significant role in Sweden’s technological development, including hosting the R1 nuclear reactor, which supported national nuclear research from 1954 to 1970. Today, KTH consists of multiple schools and campuses around Stockholm, educates a substantial share of Sweden’s engineers, and is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities.
