ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Warsaw is the largest public research university in Poland, located in Warsaw and established in 1816. It offers a wide range of programs across humanities, sciences, technology, medicine, law, economics, management, and social sciences through more than 18 faculties. Throughout its history, the university has played a major role in Polish education, culture, and intellectual development. During periods of political unrest, including the Russian occupation, World War II, and the communist era, the university faced closures, censorship, and severe restrictions. Despite these challenges, professors and students continued underground education and contributed significantly to Poland’s academic and democratic traditions. After World War II, the university was rebuilt and gradually expanded into a modern institution known for high-quality research and teaching. In recent decades, it has benefited from European funding for advanced research centers, libraries, and scientific facilities. The university has educated many notable alumni, including Nobel Prize winners, political leaders, scientists, writers, and artists such as Olga Tokarczuk and Frédéric Chopin. Today, the University of Warsaw is recognized as one of the leading universities in Poland and is internationally respected, particularly in mathematics and physics. In 2025, the university community faced a tragic axe attack on campus, which deeply shocked students, staff, and the wider public.
