COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Nursing curriculum is structured over three years, focusing on building theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies. In year one, students develop a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology through Nursing Science 1 and 2, while learning essential communication skills in Interpersonal Relationships. They begin practical nursing education with Management of Nursing Care 1 and 2, explore ethical and legal responsibilities in Professional Responsibility, examine social influences on health in Health and Wellness, and gain experience in gerontological care through Nursing the Person with Long Term Health Needs. Year two expands clinical understanding with courses like Taranaki Hauora, which addresses Hauora Māori in healthcare. Students study mental health and addiction in Knowledge for Nursing and Practice 2 and Nursing the Person with Altered Mental Health or Addiction, and broaden their clinical competencies with Knowledge for Nursing Practice 3 and Nursing the Person with Altered Physical Health. In the final year, students focus on professional readiness. Evidence for Nursing Practice introduces research and evidence-based care, while Pharmacology for Nursing Practice covers medication safety and use. Knowledge for Nursing Practice 4 and Family, Whānau and Community Nursing emphasize community and family health across the lifespan. Students also explore current challenges in Contemporary Issues in Nursing and Healthcare, and complete their preparation for registration with Transition to Registered Nurse Practice.
