ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is the largest tertiary education provider in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. It plays a key role in delivering a wide range of educational programmes, offering qualifications from Levels 1 to 9. These include degrees, diplomas, apprenticeships, and short courses, catering to both academic and vocational pathways. WITT is accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, ensuring the credibility and recognition of its qualifications. On 1 April 2020, WITT became a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga – the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology – along with 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). This move was part of a nationwide effort to unify the vocational education sector. While WITT initially retained its identity as a subsidiary, it was fully integrated into Te Pūkenga in early January 2023, becoming part of a single national entity aimed at improving consistency and access across the tertiary education system.WITT operates two main campuses in the Taranaki region: one in New Plymouth, which serves as the primary campus, and another in Hāwera. Additionally, WITT has a campus in Hamilton through its wholly owned subsidiary, the New Zealand Institute Highway Technology. This extension allows the institute to offer specialised programmes in highway technology and related fields.WITT’s combination of regional accessibility, broad curriculum offerings, and integration with the national education framework positions it as a significant provider of tertiary education in New Zealand. It continues to support local communities and industries through practical, skills-based education and training.
