COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Mathematical Sciences (MMathSci) at the University of Canterbury is a 180-point postgraduate degree that offers students the opportunity to develop advanced skills in mathematics, statistics, and data science through both coursework and a research component. The degree can be completed as an unendorsed program or with a specific endorsement in Computational and Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics. The unendorsed pathway includes either a 45-point (MASC684) or 60-point (MASC686) project, complemented by 45 to 60 points of approved 400-level coursework, and an additional 75 points in subjects such as Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science (excluding DATA401).In the endorsement pathways, students complete a thesis specific to their area of specialisation. For Computational and Applied Mathematics, students undertake CAMS689 and 90 points of relevant 400-level courses, with up to 45 points allowed from other suitable courses. The Data Science endorsement requires DATA689, one course each from MATH or STAT (excluding STAT462 and STAT448), COSC (excluding COSC480), and DATA425–480, plus 45 additional points from approved 400-level courses. The Financial Engineering option includes FENG689, 30 points from 600-level FINC courses, and 45 points from relevant 400-level coursework, with a programming course like COSC480 required if not previously completed. The Mathematics endorsement requires MATH697, 60 points from 400-level MATH courses (excluding MATH491), and 30 points from related subjects. The Statistics endorsement involves STAT689, 60 points from 400-level STAT or DATA courses (excluding STAT491 and DATA401), and 30 more points from Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science. The MMathSci provides flexibility and depth, equipping students with high-level research, analytical, and technical skills suited for careers in academia, industry, or further doctoral study.
