COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Canterbury is a research-intensive degree completed by thesis only, through the LAWS690 LLM Thesis course. It offers law graduates the opportunity to undertake in-depth, independent research in a specific area of legal interest, under the supervision of expert academics within Te Kaupeka Ture | Faculty of Law. The thesis must be a substantial piece of original work, typically between 35,000 and 50,000 words, contributing meaningful insight to legal scholarship or practice. Students can choose their research topic based on their academic interests or professional goals, allowing for specialization in areas such as international law, human rights, environmental law, commercial law, or public law. The LLM can be completed in 1 to 2 years of full-time study or 2 to 4 years part-time, offering flexibility to accommodate work or other commitments. Enrolment is available at the beginning of any month, providing additional convenience for students planning their study schedule.
