COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) at the University of Canterbury is a comprehensive 240-point postgraduate degree that provides students with advanced knowledge and research skills across a wide range of health-related disciplines. The degree is structured in two parts: Part I is equivalent to the one-year full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences and consists of coursework designed to build a solid foundation in the chosen area of study. Part II involves the completion of an independent research thesis, which may either be a full thesis or a shorter thesis combined with additional coursework, depending on the student’s academic plan and career objectives. The MHealSc typically takes a minimum of two years to complete with full-time study, and up to four years if undertaken part-time, offering flexibility for working professionals or those with other commitments. Students can pursue a general (unendorsed) program or specialise in one of several endorsement areas, including Environment and Health, Health and Community, Health Behaviour Change, Health Information Management, Health Leadership and Management, Nursing, and Palliative Care. Each endorsement allows for focused learning tailored to specific interests and professional goals within the health sector. The Nursing endorsement has a set start date in February and must be completed within a timeframe specified by Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa | Nursing Council of New Zealand for those intending to apply for registration. The MHealSc is ideal for current health professionals, recent graduates, or individuals in related sectors looking to expand their expertise, engage in interdisciplinary learning, and contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of health systems and services. Students benefit from the guidance of experienced academic staff and researchers from Te Kura Mātai Hauora | School of Health Sciences, ensuring a supportive and academically rigorous environment.
