COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (ME) at the University of Canterbury is a research-focused degree that includes a 120-point thesis in a chosen area of specialization, with the option to include up to 45 points of coursework to support the research component. The degree is designed to provide a rigorous academic environment where students can develop advanced technical knowledge and independent problem-solving skills through supervised research. Some endorsements—Bioengineering, Chemical and Process Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Transportation Engineering—can be completed through a thesis-only pathway, offering a streamlined research experience. Other specializations such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Earthquake Engineering require a combination of thesis and coursework, ensuring that students gain both theoretical understanding and practical application skills tailored to their field. The ME program is normally undertaken full-time and can be completed in one year, with a maximum of three years allowed for full-time students. Part-time study is also available, with durations ranging between three to four years depending on the student's pace and chosen endorsement. This degree may be awarded with Distinction in recognition of high academic performance. The advanced engineering courses included in the program provide a strong foundation in specialized technical areas that enhance the quality and depth of students’ research. The ME prepares graduates for careers in advanced engineering roles, research and development, and further academic study, and is suited for those aiming to specialize deeply in a particular area of engineering. Each endorsement area has specific course requirements detailed in Schedule C, allowing students to tailor their academic journey according to their professional and research interests.
