COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Civil Engineering (MCivilEng) at the University of Canterbury is a 120-point taught program designed to advance knowledge and skills in civil engineering, suitable for both recent graduates and experienced professionals. It can be completed in one year of full-time study or up to four years part-time. While primarily delivered in person, some flexibility may be available through online components, depending on the course coordinator. Students can choose to complete the degree either unendorsed or endorsed in a specialised area: Construction Management, Earthquake Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Structural Fire Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or Water Engineering. To earn an endorsed degree, students must complete at least 60 points from their chosen endorsement subject, with the remaining 60 points selected from other endorsement areas, elective MCivilEng courses, or approved 400- or 600-level courses offered by the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering (up to 45 points may be at the 400 level). For those pursuing an unendorsed degree or unable to enter a specific endorsement, the requirement is a minimum of 60 points from any endorsement subject, with the rest chosen from approved departmental courses under the same credit and level conditions. This structure allows students to tailor the program to suit their career interests while developing leadership, technical, and problem-solving skills critical to the civil engineering industry.
