COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) at the University of Canterbury is a 180-point program that can be completed full-time in approximately 17 months or part-time over up to four years. The program is structured to provide both theoretical foundations and practical skills in information systems management, making it ideal for students from various academic backgrounds, including those without prior experience in IT or Commerce. Students can start the program in either February or July. The MBIS includes four compulsory courses—MBIS601 Management of Information Systems, MBIS602 Systems Analysis and Process Modelling, MBIS603 Digital Business and Technology, and MBAZ604 Business Research Methods. In addition to these, students choose five elective courses: three in Business Information Systems and two in general Business, with the option to substitute one elective in each category with a relevant course from another discipline, subject to approval. The final component of the degree involves a choice between a 30-point Research Project (MBIS680), an Applied IS Project (MBIS673), or an Information Systems Internship (MBIS691). Students who choose the applied project or internship also complete an additional 15-point course selected from options such as MBAZ673 Innovation or MBAZ674 Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The internship provides 100 hours of real-world experience working on an IS-related project within an organisation, followed by a reflective report. The research and applied project options offer similar experiential learning opportunities, focusing on practical application of knowledge in a professional setting. Admission into the research project or internship is competitive and subject to availability, with a separate application process. The MBIS prepares graduates for high-demand roles in the rapidly evolving ICT sector by combining business acumen with advanced technical expertise.
