COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) at the University of Canterbury is a 180-point applied degree designed to be completed in 1 to 1.5 years of full-time study, or part-time over up to 3 years. The program is structured around 120 points of taught coursework and a 60-point practical project (COSC681), which typically takes place during the summer months from November to January. Students can begin the MAI in either Semester 1 (February) or Semester 2 (July), offering flexibility for those balancing study with other commitments. The curriculum includes four compulsory courses: COSC401 Machine Learning, COSC428 Computer Vision, COSC440 Deep Learning, and PHIL425 Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. These provide a strong foundation in both the technical and ethical aspects of AI. Students also choose up to 60 points of elective courses from options such as DATA425 Foundations of Deep Learning, DATA430 Medical Data Informatics, ENCE461 Embedded Systems 2, and other 400-level Computer Science or Software Engineering courses. With approval, students may substitute up to 30 points with relevant courses from other disciplines such as Mathematics, Statistics, or Information Systems. The MAI equips graduates with practical skills and theoretical knowledge to apply AI techniques in diverse real-world contexts, making them well-prepared for roles in industry or further research.
