COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is a four-year full-time degree (or up to ten years part-time) that consists of 480 points: 210 points from compulsory Law courses, 195 points from elective Law courses, and 75 points from non-Law courses taken from other degrees. It provides a comprehensive legal education with a focus on both theoretical and practical learning, covering the New Zealand legal system and allowing students to specialise through elective options. The degree begins with two compulsory first-year Law courses—LAWS101 and LAWS110—alongside five non-Law 100-level courses of the student's choice (excluding ACCT152, ACCT252, and CRJU150). Progression into second-year Law courses is limited and requires strong academic performance (normally at least a B grade) in the first-year Law courses. In the second year, students study key areas of law including Contract, Torts, Land Law, and Public Law. The third year includes further core content such as Criminal Law and Equity and Trusts, as well as elective courses at 300 level in areas like international human rights, environmental law, and family law. The final year is entirely elective, with students choosing eight advanced Law courses, including LAWS398 Legal Ethics if they plan to seek admission as a Barrister and Solicitor. The structure also supports flexibility, allowing students to pursue a double degree or switch to another program if they choose not to continue with the LLB. With practical opportunities such as clinical legal work, mooting, internships, and involvement in student-run law societies, the LLB offers a well-rounded legal education that prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in law, policy, government, and beyond.
