The Bachelor of Environmental Science with Honours (BEnvSci(Hons)) is a four-year full-time degree, or up to eight years part-time, requiring a minimum of 480 points. This includes 255 points of compulsory Environmental Science courses, at least 135 points toward a chosen major, and the remaining points from elective courses. At least 120 points must be at 400-level. Students also complete 400 hours of practical work through the ENVR300 Environmental Science Work Experience course, which carries no fees or points and is usually undertaken during the summer months of the second or third year. The program integrates introductory courses, fieldwork, and internships, offering a diverse and applied learning experience.Compulsory courses begin at 100-level with foundational science and environmental courses such as ENVR101, BIOL112, GEOG106, SCIE101, STAT101, and a chemistry course (CHEM111 or CHEM114). At the 200-level, students take ENVR209, ENVR210, and BIOL274, alongside their major courses. The 300-level includes ENVR302, ENVR303, and PSYC341, with students needing at least a B GPA in ENVR302 and ENVR303 to progress to the Honours year. The 400-level features advanced courses such as ENVR411, ENVR415, and the ENVR481 research project, along with major-specific courses.Elective courses consist of at least 45 points from two groups. Group 1 includes language options like Te Reo Māori, Japanese, and French. Group 2 includes science-based courses from subjects such as Antarctic Studies, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Psychology, Statistics, and Water Science. Students choose a major from one of six areas: Ecosystem Health and Biosecurity, Environmental Change, Environmental Contamination, Environmental Hazards and Disasters, Freshwater, or Sustainable Coasts. This degree equips students with interdisciplinary skills and hands-on experience to prepare for careers in environmental science across various sectors.
