COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) at the University of Canterbury is a four-year, 480-point degree designed to develop both foundational and advanced engineering skills. The program begins with a first year comprising 120 points, including six compulsory courses in academic skills, engineering fundamentals, mathematics, physics, and programming, alongside three discipline-specific 100-level courses. This structure supports both students with a clear discipline preference and those who are undecided, as it allows flexibility in specialisation. Entry into the second year is competitive and based on academic performance. The subsequent three years are dedicated to a chosen engineering discipline, such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical and Process, Software, Electrical and Electronic, Forest, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering. Each discipline has a set curriculum, and many offer optional minors including Aerospace, Biomedical, Bioprocess, Communications and Network, Environmental Process, Power, Structural, Sustainable Energy, and Water and Environmental Systems Engineering. These minors allow students to deepen their expertise in specialised areas. The program also requires the completion of ENGR200, a practical work experience course involving 800 hours (about 100 days) of industry placement, which integrates academic knowledge with real-world engineering practice. This combination of theoretical learning, hands-on training, and professional exposure ensures graduates are well-prepared for global engineering careers.
