COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Data Science at the University of Canterbury is a three-year degree requiring a minimum of 360 points. This includes 195 points from compulsory core Data Science courses, 135–165 points from courses specific to the chosen major, and up to 30 elective points. Students must complete at least 225 points above 100-level, including a minimum of 105 points at 300-level. The degree blends foundational courses in programming, mathematics, statistics, and computer science with practical lab work and collaborative projects. In the first year, students complete introductory courses like DATA101, COSC121, COSC122, MATH102, and SCIE101, along with major-specific courses. The second year focuses on intermediate-level learning through courses such as DATA201, DATA203, COSC262, PHIL240, and one of STAT201 or STAT202, alongside further major-specific coursework. In the final year, students engage in advanced study through DATA301, DATA303, and either STAT315 or STAT318, culminating in a capstone project supervised by industry professionals. The program offers several major options including Bioinformatics, Business Analytics, Data Science, Population Health Data Science, and Spatial Data Science. The Computational Linguistics major is currently not open to new enrolments. Through its comprehensive structure and industry-aligned focus, the program equips graduates with technical expertise and real-world experience in applying data science solutions across various sectors.
