COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Communication (BC) at the University of Canterbury includes a structured curriculum combining foundational knowledge, practical media skills, and advanced study in a chosen major. In the first year, students complete core courses such as COMS101 Media and Society, COMS105 Public Communication, MGMT100 Fundamentals of Management, and WRIT101 Writing for Academic Success. The second year deepens this foundation with courses like COMS201 Media Audiences, COMS207 Social Media, COMS231 Digital Media Production, and DIGI204 Communicating with Data and Digital Media, alongside major-specific 200-level courses. In the final year, all students take COMS330 Communication in Context and complete their 300-level major requirements. The degree also requires 105 points of elective courses, with at least 30 points in Arts and 45 points above 100-level, although Communication Strategy and Practice majors require only 90 elective points. Students can choose from four majors: Communication Strategy and Practice, Journalism, Political Communication, and Tauwhitinga Māori: Māori Communication Strategy and Practice. The program also allows for internship or project-based courses to gain industry experience, making it a well-rounded, professionally relevant qualification for diverse careers in media and communication.
