COURSE CURRICULUM

This early childhood education degree covers a broad range of topics over three years to prepare students for professional teaching roles. In the first year, students are introduced to early childhood education, learning theories, and the New Zealand context of early childhood education. They also explore reflective practice, curriculum implementation, and develop an understanding of language, culture, and identity.In the second year, the focus expands to include literacies and the arts, advanced language and cultural studies, and the specific language used in early childhood centres. Students engage in professional practice and study science, technology, and mathematics, as well as place-based education. There is also a focus on Māori knowledge and cultural identity, emphasizing the importance of biculturalism in teaching.The third year deepens practical experience through applied professional practice placements. Students study social justice, advocacy, and inquiry methods, equipping them to conduct research and reflect critically on their teaching. The course includes two professional practice modules where students gain hands-on experience in early childhood settings under supervision. Practitioner inquiry encourages students to investigate and improve their teaching practice, preparing them to be confident, reflective educators ready to support diverse learners.
