COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this postgraduate art and design program, students begin their studies with a focus on research design and critical context. In Semester 1, students undertake two core courses: ARDN800 Te Ao Mahora Creative Practice Research Design, which provides a foundation in creative research methodologies and practices, and ARDN808 Contextual Review, where students explore and critique relevant theoretical and contextual frameworks related to their practice. These courses support students in developing a clear research direction for their thesis. Alongside these, students choose two elective courses, allowing them to tailor their studies to their specific creative interests or expand their knowledge in complementary areas of art and design.In Semester 2 of the first year, students begin work on their major project, the VSAR999 Thesis, which carries 120 points and extends into the second year of the program. The thesis is a significant component of the degree, involving sustained and in-depth research through creative practice. It allows students to investigate a personally relevant theme or question, supported by academic supervision and access to specialised facilities.Enrolment in the thesis is conditional on achieving at least a B- average across coursework and receiving approval for a detailed research proposal. This ensures students are well-prepared and capable of undertaking an independent and rigorous project.In Year 2, the focus is entirely on the continuation and completion of the VSAR999 Thesis. During this time, students work independently on their research project while receiving guidance from their supervisors and participating in critiques and peer discussions. This final stage of the degree culminates in the presentation and examination of their thesis work, which contributes new knowledge or perspectives to the field of contemporary visual arts and design practice.
