COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science program is structured over three years and designed to provide a balanced and comprehensive science education while allowing flexibility to explore diverse areas of interest. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts through courses such as Science & Society or Mahitahi | Collaborative Practices, and engage in Natural Sciences and Mathematical & Computer Sciences courses. The curriculum includes two major courses that begin to shape the student’s specialization, along with two flexible components that can be selected based on individual interests or to complement their chosen major.In the second year, the program deepens students’ scientific understanding and practical skills. All students take Vision Mātauranga: Science Practice in Aotearoa, which integrates Māori knowledge systems into scientific practice. They also choose between Instrumental Analysis or Scientific Inquiry, both of which build research and analytical capabilities. Students take three more major courses to continue developing expertise in their specialization, alongside three flexible component courses, offering the opportunity to broaden their academic exposure or tailor their learning to future career goals.In the third year, the focus shifts to independent research and application of accumulated knowledge. Students complete a two-part Science Capstone Project, which involves significant research or practical work under supervision, serving as a culmination of their scientific learning. Alongside this, they take three additional major courses to solidify their specialization. The year also includes three flexible components, allowing further exploration of interdisciplinary topics or deeper engagement with areas aligned to their career aspirations. This curriculum structure supports both academic depth in a chosen major and breadth across scientific disciplines, preparing students for a variety of careers in science, research, or further study.
