COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the occupational therapy program, all health sciences students take common courses during the first semester, which provide a comprehensive understanding of general healthcare. This foundational knowledge supports students as they move into specialized study. In the second semester, students are introduced to occupational therapy, learning about the meaning and characteristics of various occupations that shape daily life. They also complete a supervised fieldwork practicum, gaining early practical experience that helps bridge theory and practice. In the second year, the focus shifts to understanding how illness or injury affects a person’s ability to perform daily occupations and the typical interventions used by occupational therapists. Students engage in practice education during both semesters, which provides hands-on learning in real-world settings. They study how different environments impact occupational performance and explore research methods, while also developing group work skills. Electives allow students to tailor their learning to their interests. Throughout the year, students complete required fieldwork hours, further enhancing their practical experience. In the third year, students learn to apply evidence-based practice when working with individuals, as well as how to engage with communities, organizations, or groups to promote participation. They also explore strategies for changing systems to remove barriers and enable access and inclusion. Critical decision-making skills are developed around assessment and intervention, preparing students to make informed choices in their professional practice. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research skills to prepare students for diverse roles in occupational therapy, enabling them to support individuals and communities in achieving meaningful participation in everyday life.
