COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the human resource management and employment relations program, students begin with core business courses that introduce key concepts in business processes and practices. These foundational courses help students understand the broader business environment and support their decision-making when selecting a major. In the second semester, students start to explore the fundamentals of human resource management and employment relations. This includes an introduction to how organisations manage people, employment practices, and how to support a productive and engaged workforce. During this time, students also begin courses from their chosen second major, minor, or electives, giving them the opportunity to tailor their degree to their interests and goals. In the second year, students build on this foundation by examining the more complex aspects of employment relations and human resources. They gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between employees, employers, trade unions, and government, and how these interactions shape the workplace. Courses may also cover organisational behaviour, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, and learning and development. These topics prepare students to manage people and organisational challenges in a wide range of industries. Students continue taking courses related to their secondary major, minor, or electives to complement their HR knowledge. In the final year, students complete the last of their coursework in the first semester, rounding out their academic learning. The second semester focuses on practical workplace experience, where students apply their knowledge in a real organisational setting. This can take the form of working in an organisation, launching a business venture, or completing an applied project under academic supervision. Recent placement opportunities have included well-known organisations such as DB Breweries, Farmers Trading Company, Fletcher Construction, Nestlé NZ Ltd, Progressive Enterprises, SKY TV, Waitemata District Health Board, and Warehouse Stationery, giving students valuable hands-on experience in the HR field.
