COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the finance program, students begin with core business courses in the first semester, providing a foundational understanding of business practices and helping them make informed decisions about their academic path. In the second semester, the focus shifts to the fundamentals of finance and financial analysis, where students learn the basics of financial decision-making, valuation, and how financial systems operate. During this time, students also begin their second major, minor, or elective courses, allowing them to customise their degree to align with their interests and career goals. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge by focusing on three key areas of finance: financial markets and institutions, investments and portfolio theory, and corporate finance. These subjects help students understand the structure and function of financial systems, how to analyse investment options, and how companies make financing decisions. Additional topics may include international finance and the social impact of financial decisions, offering broader perspectives on global and ethical considerations in finance. Students continue building on their second major, minor, or elective studies throughout the year. The final year of the program is designed to integrate learning and provide real-world experience. In the first semester, students complete the last of their academic courses, preparing them for the transition to professional practice. In the second semester, students undertake workplace experience, applying their financial knowledge in a practical setting. They may choose to work in an organisation, start a business venture, or solve a real-life business problem with support from academic staff. This valuable experience enhances employability and develops industry-relevant skills. Recent placements have included prestigious organisations such as ASB Securities, BNZ, Goldman Sachs, Heartland Bank, Pathfinder Asset Management, PwC, Treasury, and One NZ, giving students exposure to diverse areas of the financial sector.
