COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the economics program, all students begin by taking common core courses in the first semester, which provide a broad understanding of essential business principles and practices. These foundational courses help students explore different areas within business and make informed decisions about their academic focus moving forward. In the second semester, students are introduced to the fundamentals of microeconomics and macroeconomics, developing an initial understanding of how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions within various economic systems. During this time, students also begin courses related to their second major, minor, or electives, allowing them to start shaping their degree around personal interests or career goals. In the second year, the program deepens students’ knowledge of economic theory and its practical applications. Courses typically cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, equipping students with analytical tools to examine a wide range of real-world issues faced by consumers, businesses, and governments. These studies enable students to critically evaluate public policies, market behavior, and economic performance at both national and global levels. Students also continue their secondary major, minor, or elective courses to broaden their expertise. The final year of the program begins with completing the last of the academic coursework related to their majors and minors. In the second semester, students undertake a workplace experience, which is an essential part of their professional preparation. This hands-on experience allows students to apply their economic knowledge in real-world settings through work placements, entrepreneurial ventures, or applied projects. These opportunities offer valuable industry exposure and practical skills. Recent placement partners have included Auckland Council, ASB, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Spark, The Warehouse Group, and One NZ, providing students with insight into a variety of sectors. The combination of theoretical knowledge and applied experience ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in economics and related fields.
