ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Auckland University of Technology (AUT), known in Māori as Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makau Rau, is New Zealand’s third-largest university by student enrolment, with around 29,100 students across three Auckland campuses. AUT was officially granted university status on January 1, 2000, evolving from the Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT), which itself had a long history dating back to the establishment of Auckland Technical School in 1895. The institution was renamed Seddon Memorial Technical College in 1913, and later became the Auckland Technical Institute (ATI) in 1963, following education reforms that separated secondary and tertiary education. It was renamed AIT in 1989 before achieving full university status. The university now comprises five faculties and two specialist locations: AUT Millennium and the AUT Centre for Refugee Education. In 2018, AUT enrolled over 29,000 students, including 4,194 international students from 94 countries and 2,417 postgraduate students. Its student body spans a wide age range, with 22% aged 25–39 and 10% aged 40 or older. As of 2016, AUT employed 2,474 full-time equivalent staff, including both academic and professional roles. Sir Paul Reeves, a respected national figure, served as AUT’s chancellor from 2005 until his passing in 2011.
