ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Twente (UT), located in Enschede, Netherlands, is a public technical university known for its strong academic performance and innovation. Founded in 1961 as Technische Hogeschool Twente (THT), it was the third polytechnic institute in the country, following Delft and Eindhoven. In 1986, it was renamed Universiteit Twente following reforms to the Dutch Academic Education Act. The university was established to stimulate the economy of the northeastern Twente region, which was experiencing industrial decline, particularly in the textile sector. The Dutch government chose Enschede due to its historical manufacturing base and the region’s need for economic development. The municipality contributed to the effort by providing the Drienerlo estate for the university’s campus, making it the first true campus-style university in the Netherlands. UT has gained global recognition, consistently ranked among the top 170 universities worldwide by several major international ranking systems. Nationally, it has been ranked as the top technical university by Keuzegids Universiteiten. It is a member of the 4TU federation, collaborating with Delft, Eindhoven, and Wageningen universities, and also participates in the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), reinforcing its focus on technology, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary research.
